Philosophy

Alison believes that it is never too late to learn violin, regardless of ability level or age. Music-making should be a joyous activity that enriches the lives of students and their families, while at the same time providing a stimulating challenge. Through music, students will learn discipline, perseverance, and creativity as we explore this art form together.

Experience and Training

Alison is a certified Suzuki instructor, has taken multiple collegiate courses in traditional pedagogy methods, and has participated in an O'Connor Method teacher training course. Alison began teaching violin privately when she was a high school student over 15 years ago. In addition to maintaining a private studio, she has worked as a camp counselor, sectional coach, assistant instructor at a Montessori preschool, geometry and writing tutor, high school music theory and history instructor, and Suzuki group instructor. 

Lessons for Adults

Adults of all ages and abilities are welcome. It is never too late to begin learning a musical instrument, and no prior knowledge is necessary. Lesson content will be determined based on student interests and goals. 

Lessons for Children

For children ages 3-8, Alison recommends the Suzuki Method and asks that a parent or adult caregiver be actively involved in lessons and home practice sessions to ensure a positive, successful learning environment. Parents need not have any musical experience, knowledge, or training, as they will be learning side-by-side with their child. Older children and teens will be taught according to the method that best suits their interests. Parental involvement is recommended, but not required. 

Curriculum

Every student is different, and Alison recognizes that a one-size-fits all approach is not always best! She will choose repertoire and exercises that suit the student's age, ability, and interest. During lessons the focus will be on building the skills necessary to play the violin well, rather than simply learning the notes and bowings to new songs. Note-reading, a how-to of practicing, critical listening skills, improvisation, music theory, and music history will be integrated into the lessons when appropriate. For a list of Alison’s preferred method books, please visit the Student Resources page.

  • Fine Arts Building – 410 S. Michigan Ave, Saturday mornings

  • Home Studio – Located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, near the intersection of Lawrence and Sheridan

Cancellations and Make-ups

  • 24-hour cancellation policy: Lessons cancelled without 24 hours notice are unexcused and will be charged at the full rate. 

  • Lessons cancelled with more than 24 hours notice are considered excused and if eligible, will receive a make-up or credit. Please note that make-ups are not guaranteed.

  • ​In the event of instructor cancellation, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at a mutually agreed up on time.

Payment

  • Payment for lessons at Alison's Home Studio and the Fine Arts Building is due monthly at the first lesson of each month or in packages of 10 lessons.

  • Payment for single coaching sessions and trial lessons at Alison's Home Studio and the Fine Arts Building is due at the lesson.

  • Payment for lessons at Adler Arts Center is handled by Adler.
